Why does my body ache more during pregnancy?

As your baby grows, your posture and centre of gravity change, placing more load through areas like your lower back, hips, pelvis, glutes, neck and shoulders.

Pregnancy can commonly bring:

  • Lower back discomfort
  • Tight hips and glutes
  • Pelvic pain or pressure
  • Calf cramps and tired legs
  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Headaches linked to muscular tension
  • Trouble getting comfortable at night
  • General muscular fatigue

Pregnancy massage is designed to work with these changes, focusing on where your body is holding tension and what can be safely treated to help you feel more comfortable.

What position will I be in during pregnancy massage?

From around 20 weeks, we primarily use supported side lying and reclined positioning to keep you comfortable throughout your treatment.

We use pillows and bolstering to support your:

  • Belly
  • Hips and pelvis
  • Legs
  • Back and shoulders

For many mums, this feels much more comfortable than lying face down as pregnancy progresses.

Your therapist will adjust your position at any time if something doesn’t feel right. You should never have to tolerate an uncomfortable position just to receive a massage.

Can I have firm pressure during pregnancy massage?

Yes, depending on your comfort and individual circumstances.

Pregnancy massage does not always need to be extremely light. Pressure should be tailored to you.

Some mums prefer gentle relaxation, while others need firmer work through areas of muscular tension.

Our therapists adjust the pressure and techniques to suit pregnancy safely, while checking in with you throughout the treatment.

You are always in control of the pressure.

Pregnancy FAQs + More info

Is pregnancy massage safe?

For many women, pregnancy massage can be a safe and supportive treatment when performed by a suitably trained therapist and adapted to the individual pregnancy.

Before treatment, we consider:

  • Your stage of pregnancy
  • Your health and pregnancy history
  • Any complications or concerns
  • Your comfort and preferred pressure
  • Advice from your healthcare team

If we feel medical clearance is needed, we may ask you to check with your GP, midwife or obstetric team first.

Your safety always comes first.

Pregnancy massage for pelvic pain and SPD

Pelvic girdle pain and discomfort around the pubic symphysis, often called SPD, can make everyday movement exhausting.

You may notice pain when:

  • Walking
  • Rolling over in bed
  • Getting in or out of the car
  • Climbing stairs
  • Standing on one leg
  • Trying to get comfortable at night

Massage cannot treat the underlying cause, but it may help ease some of the muscular tension through the hips, glutes and lower back as your body compensates.

We adapt your positioning and treatment to avoid aggravating your symptoms, and for more significant pelvic pain we recommend working alongside your GP, midwife, obstetric team or physiotherapist.

Pregnancy massage for calf cramps and tired legs

Calf cramps and heavy, tired legs are common during pregnancy, especially as your body places more demand on the lower body.

Massage can focus on areas such as:

  • Calves
  • Feet
  • Hamstrings
  • Glutes
  • Surrounding muscles

This can help ease muscular tightness and that heavy, fatigued feeling many mums experience.

If you have sudden one sided calf pain, swelling, redness, heat or unexplained tenderness, please seek medical advice before booking a massage.
